The heart pumps blood through the lungs and the rest of the body.
1. The heart as a double pump
The right side receives blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs. The left side receives blood from the lungs and pumps it throughout the body. The left ventricle has the thickest wall because it pumps blood the farthest.
